Are You Surrounded By Crabs?
Crabs in a bucket
Whaaaatttttt! It’s definitely September around here. The weather is changing, its getting colder, football started up yesterday and Krank was PACKED today!
I’m definitely going to miss summer, but I LOVE the vibe that September brings…even more so than January.
Anyway, I wanted to talk to you today about an important subject that I believe is the ULTIMATE DIFFERENCE MAKER in your success…in anything.
Crabs in a bucket…
No, I’m not talking about a delicious bucket of garlic & butter crabs with an ice cold Corona from Bayville NJ down the Shore.
I’m talking about your friends, family and social circle.
You see, one of the things I talk about a LOT is who you spend your time with…
I address this in each of our 6-week Challenge orientations.
I’ve talked about Jim Rohn’s famous quote – “You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with” – numerous times in this newsletter.
Today, I want to share a real-life analogy, as well as give you a great solution that I heard this weekend.
First the fact…
If you put one crab in a bucket with no lid it will easily escape.
However, as soon as you put more than one crab in a bucket they’re all trapped.
Because when one crab tries to escape the others will inevitably pull it down. Whether out of fear of the unknown or “king of the hill” mentality, the crabs will prevent each other from escape and ultimately cause their own death.
This is a perfect analogy for what too-often happens with people and the people they spend their time with…
When you try to “escape” to a better life, your friends/family who are not ready/willing to make a change (whether out of fear or laziness) will do what they can (often unconsciously, sometimes deliberately) to sabotage your efforts…
In some cases these people actually think they’re helping you.
They believe they’re protecting you from getting hurt or failing.
Their intentions are good.
However, what they don’t understand is that they don’t understand…
They suffer from “crab in a bucket syndrome.”
So, what can you do about it?
Well, here’s the solution that I heard this weekend from one of my favorite philosophers and personal development “gurus”, Bob Proctor:
“Go less often, and stay for less time.”
I understand you’re in a difficult position.
Often the crabs in your life are your closest friends and family members. You can’t exactly get rid of them…
So, just look for ways to hang out with them less often, and when you do…spend less time with them.
I know. Easier said than done, right?
I never said it would be easy, but it IS quite simple…
Hey, you get one life and you’re the designer…so make a decision of who you’re going to spend your time with – at least your “free time” – and how you’re going to spend it.
Now, if you really want to accelerate your results – in anything – you also need to put yourself in an environment where those people will “lift you up” and help you “out of the bucket.”
I always tell prospective clients at our 6-week Challenge orientations…
“If you want to lose weight and keep it off then you need to spend time with people who have done iti or are in the process of doing so. In my opinion, that’s one of the beset things about being a member of Krank Nutley.”
The same rule goes for anything…
Look, if you want to do achieve something then you need to surround yourself with people who have achieved or are working to achieve that same something. End of story.
Makes sense, right?
Alright, here’s your assignment.
- Look at your goals
- Ask yourself, “Are the people I spend the most time with aligned with my goals? Have they already achieved my goals or are they currently working towards a similar goal?”
- If the answer to the above question is NO, look for an environment you can put yourself into to get a YES.
Of course, if there’s any way I can help you please let me know.
